Displaced #4 – inconvenient Intermezzo

Evocative stories of people who have to leave their homes due to climate change.

Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as planned and we are still in Switzerland rather than Kenya, and not least because of all the snow we had last Thursday. We were supposed to fly out that evening, but got stuck in the snow chaos on the way to Zurich airport. When we finally got there much too late, Monika wanted to hurry to the check-in to let them know that we were still coming. She got out of the car at the entrance to the parking garage and when she rushed over to the elevator, she was hit hard on the head by the falling parking barrier. She was literally knocked down by the barrier and then spent the night not on the plane but in hospital. She is now back home with a concussion and has been banned from traveling and working until further notice. It was a lot of bad luck, but it could have ended way worse.

But last week wasn’t so great in other respects either. We met a potential donor we hoped would support our project. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way. It appeared that the topic of climate change and migration was too sensitive for him. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the hurdles to raising funds for this work and this topic are really high. With the exception of the UN, we have actually only received rejections so far.

However, we have no doubt about the importance of the topic of our work and the fact that climate induced displacement will become an even bigger issue in the future. That’s why we won’t give up and will carry on!

Cordially & see you soon
